Common questions

It isn’t showing a reading.

That means it can’t hear one string clearly enough to be sure. Pluck a single string firmly, let it ring, and bring the phone a little closer. Other strings ringing at the same time will stop it too. If the screen says it can’t hear at all, the microphone is switched off; see below.

It says microphone access is off.

Open the Settings app, find Strand, and turn on Microphone. The sound is never recorded; the privacy page has the details.

How do I switch to the strobe design?

In Strand’s settings, under Design. Appearance, just below it, sets light, dark, or following the system.

How do I change the reference pitch?

In Strand’s settings, under Reference pitch.

Can I tune without looking at the screen?

Yes. Turn on Audio Tuning Mode in Strand’s settings and the reading is spoken and played through the speaker. Every control also works with VoiceOver.

I play left-handed.

Which instruments does it support?

Tunings for guitar, 12-string, bass, ukulele and mandolin are built in, and you can make your own. The tuner is chromatic, so it reads any note on any stringed instrument.

Why is a number sometimes missing when I strum?

With several strings ringing at once it can’t tell which one to measure, so it shows nothing rather than guess. Tune one string at a time.
